This I Believe Essay
The purpose of this assignment was for me to explore my values and beliefs. By taking the time to explore my beliefs, I have had the opportunity to isolate what is most important to me.

I believe balance and simplicity are the
two keys to maintaining happiness in life. Coming from a small town, I grew up
with the belief that life is about enjoying the simple things: watching
thunderstorms on the back patio, heading to Friday night football games, and
spending lazy Sundays at grandpa and grandma’s house playing cards.
However, I faced a dilemma when I came to UC. I was so amazed with the city life and all that college had to offer. I loved attending the Reds games, enjoying the weekend life, rock climbing with the mountaineering club, hanging out at Center Court, etc. I began to focus my life more on what I did than enjoying the simple things in life. I would walk to class without enjoying the beautiful architecture and I would enjoy the city life on the weekends opposed to studying. So when sophomore year came around, I was sure that since I had a year of having fun that I should study all the time. Wrong. Halfway through the year I realized that life isn’t about what grade you receive in Pathophysiology or how many clubs you are president of. Instead, I realized that life is about balancing your time.
This year, I believe that I have it right. I’ve been splitting my time between studying, working at the hospital, heading to the gym, hanging out with my friends, cooking with my roommates, etc. And yes, I have made time to watch thunderstorms again. Do I regret it not enjoying the simple things freshman year and not balancing my time sophomore year? Not at all. These past two years I have met some of the best people who I now consider my family and I have learned more about nursing and the human body than I could have ever thought possible.
Right now, my goal is just to enjoy living life. I have realized that the greatest joys can come from the simplest things in life. I have also learned that without balance, one aspect of your life will be out of line. So, as Mandy Hale once said: “It’s not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself, & to make happiness a priority. It’s necessary.”
