Please watch this video. It is a perfect example of why I chose nursing.
I love this video because it reminds me why I am doing what I am doing.
My heart especially goes out to the elderly in this video (especially the elderly man in the elevator whose wife had a stroke). My heart has always gone out to the elderly patients and I believe these are the ones that I pray for the most.
I also like this video because it reminds the viewers that healthcare workers also have lives of their own: they're missing out on family parties, pulling 12-16 hour shifts, and may have healthcare problems of their own as well. However, doctors and nurses choose to be at the hospital on those special or troublesome days because they care. They care about their patients in general and the specific patients that they have formed bonds with.
But most of all, the reason that I like this video is because it shows the point of view of the patients. It shows that patients may be 7.000 miles from home or worried about how to pay for their hospital stay. I need this reminder because some days you get so caught up in your "to do" list that you forget that nursing doesn't involve simply involve just skills, but empathy as well. Nursing involves giving hugs, high fives, and holding a patient's hand as they tell you things that they're too afraid to tell their families. That's what nursing is.
